Richard Kincaid didn’t bother to knock as he stepped inside the Tallin’s open door. “You heard the news?” He asked.

Michael, his attention focused elsewhere snapped a quick irritated, “What?” as he once again attempted to wedge a sliver of wood in place on a chair leg. Unconsciously holding his breath, Michael rapped it in place with a mallet. Setting the chair on the floor he tested for any hint of a wobble. He let out his breath with satisfaction, smiling.

Kincaid, observing the completed repair, moved farther into the room and repeated his question, “I asked if you heard the news about Jason.”

Michael straightened giving the older man his full attention and shook his head.

“It seems our Mr. Jason is seeking greener pastures. His mother announced he left for New Damascus with this last trader, three days ago.”

Michael couldn’t keep his skepticism from showing, “You sure?”

“Heard it from her smiling lips myself.” Richard helped himself to a slice of cheese sitting on the side table. “Says he's going to learn the grain business…from experts, mind you according to his mother. She said there was nothing for him worth learning here. Pulled out with the trader.”

Michael absently scratched at a non-existent itch on his arm.

Richard spoke around the cheese, studying Michael's reaction, “I didn't believe it either, I checked around. His quad says he’s gone.”

Tossing the mallet on the table, Michael faced Richard Kincaid, “I spoke with Mustafa. He said nothing about escorting someone. Their pack string was full, and besides, they had no cart. I can't see Jason walking for any distance.” Shrugging slightly, he added, “But then again, I didn't wait to see him off either, so I really can’t say with any surety.”

“Hmm. Well, maybe it was a last-minute thing, y'know…” The older man exchanged a conspiratorial look with Michael. It only served to make Michael more concerned. He wasn't the only one concerned with Gillian's behavior.

“Keep your ears open. Something’s happened.”

Richard grunted, “Way ahead of you. Already put out feelers. That boy and his mother do nothing straight.”
